Warm Climate Pollinator Magnet

If you’re looking for a shrub that brings a cheery touch to your summer/fall garden, look no further than Chicklet® Gold trumpet bush/esperanza (Tecoma stans). This is a warm climate beauty, but don’t worry, my fellow cool climate gardeners, this shrub is an absolutely stunning patio plant as well.

In summer, vibrant yellow blooms adorn this handsome shrub, and the blooms continue through fall, adding a touch of cheer no matter where it’s planted. The tubular flowers are packed with nectar, attracting an abundance of pollinators, including hummingbirds! At 3-6’ tall and 3’ wide, this shrub fits into so many gardens, and it even shines in containers in warm or cool climates.

Chicklet® Gold esperanza is suited for USDA zones 8-11 and thrives in full sun. Once established, this tough shrub is drought- and heat-tolerant and deer-resistant.

Chicklet® Gold requires very little pruning to keep it looking its best, thanks to its compact habit, but if desired, it can be pruned to shape in early spring after the plant has leafed out.

What to Avoid Planting in the Fall

Fall planting for shrubs can be a great idea, as planting shrubs in fall gives your plant time to focus solely on root growth over winter when the shrub is dormant. That being said, there are exceptions. Not every shrub benefits from fall planting, such as broadleaf evergreens or plants that you are pushing the hardiness zone for. Check out the video below, where Stacey explains why fall planting is so great for almost anything and what plants you should wait until spring to plant.
