Homegrown Fruit Without the Hassle
Who wouldn’t want a plant that’s both beautiful and useful? Easy As Pie® bush cherry (Prunus x) checks all the boxes with its perfect blend of form and function. It is also incredibly easy to care for, making homegrown fruit less work and way more fun!
Easy as Pie bush cherry provides three seasons of interest. In spring, it puts on a charming display of ornamental white flowers, which eventually give way to shiny red fruit in summer. These flavorful cherries taste great in jams and baked goods, and even on their own as a fresh, tart snack. Best of all, this bush does not need a pollinator to produce! Its visual appeal continues into fall with the foliage taking on fiery orange and yellow tones for some late-season color.
As its name suggests, Easy as Pie bush cherry is a breeze to grow. Suited to USDA zones 3 – 8, it produces its best flowers and fruit in full sun. At a height and width of 3 – 4.5′, it fits nicely into different-sized landscapes, which is often a challenge for larger cherry trees. Its flowers develop on old wood, and the fruit grows from those stems, so pruning is neither recommended nor necessary.
Happy Thanksgiving!
All this talk about pie has me thinking about Thanksgiving dinner, and what’s Thanksgiving without a little dessert? In keeping with the fall season, I always enjoy a classic slice of pumpkin pie piled high with whipped cream. My brother can’t get enough pecan pie, while my sister goes straight for apple, especially when there is a bit of caramel drizzled on top. No matter what your favorite is, a sweet treat is forever the perfect way to cap off a delicious meal spent with family and friends!
