A Big Show in a Tidy Package
Gatsby Glow Ball® oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) is the latest addition to the Gatsby™ series. It offers the same impressive show gardeners love, but its mature habit is much smaller, making it a better fit for a wider range of landscapes and spaces.
Like our other oakleaf hydrangeas, Gatsby Glow Ball is a bundle of interest. Its white summer flowers age to a fresh lime green, and its dramatic fall foliage makes it one of the most colorful shrubs in the landscape. What sets it apart is its dwarf habit, which reaches just 3–4 feet tall and wide. This makes it more useful than the giants of the past, perfect for planting as a low hedge, grouping in a border, or adding to woodland edges for a touch of native whimsy.

Gatsby Glow Ball oakleaf hydrangea is suited to USDA Zones 5–9. It is the most shade-tolerant type of hydrangea; however, it still benefits from some sun to produce its best flowers and fall color. It prefers moist, well-draining soil. Flower buds form on old wood, so pruning is not recommended, as any cuts will reduce its flowering potential. While it may appear a bit awkward at first, Gatsby Glow Ball will transform into a true beauty once established in the ground.
