Jumpstart Spring with an Early Bloomer

When winter ends, the landscape is left looking rather gloomy. The bare trees, brown grass, and cloudy skies will have you eager for spring and its bright colors. Luckily, with the right plants, you won’t have to wait long!

A great way to bridge the seasons is to add some early bloomers to your garden. These plants shake up the dreary scene with some much-needed energy and color. One fantastic option is Interstella® lily of the valley shrub (Pieris japonica), a shade-tolerant flowering evergreen.

Interstella lily of the valley shrub is one of the first and longest plants to bloom in spring. It boasts an abundance of ruby bell-shaped flowers that flow elegantly from the branches in a weeping chain. After the blooms fade, new growth follows, flushing a pretty red hue. The evergreen foliage remains attractive year-round for an always fresh appearance.

Interstella lily of the valley shrub is suited to USDA zones 5 – 8. It grows well in a range of sun exposures but flowers best in spots with full to part sun. It is specific about its soil, needing one that is moist, acidic, and well-draining. Maturing to a height and width of 3 to 4 feet, regular pruning is not recommended.
