A New and Improved Black Diervilla
Happy Halloween! Today, I am excited to feature a plant even Morticia Addams can enjoy: Kodiak Jet Black® diervilla (Diervilla x). This striking shrub has extremely dark foliage that appears nearly black to the eye. While some gardeners may hesitate to choose a shrub in this shade, the moody hue can play a very stylish role in the landscape, adding intrigue and depth to any space.
Before we dive in, it is worth mentioning that Kodiak Jet Black is replacing the original Kodiak Black® diervilla, as it’s not only a truer, deeper, more consistent black, it also does a much better job of maintaining that rich color. In fact, it is the first black diervilla that lasts throughout the entire season without any fading, making this shrub all treat, no trick!
Kodiak Jet Black diervilla has very deep reddish-black foliage that provides a captivating contrast to surrounding plants. Its leaves seem to darken even more in summer with the emergence of its own bright yellow flowers. These blooms are enjoyed by pollinators throughout the season and can serve as a dramatic touch to a cut flower arrangement.
Kodiak Jet Black diervilla is a native variety suited to USDA zones 3-8. It is a hardy and adaptable shrub, so it doesn’t require much work to look good. For its best foliage color and bloom count, it benefits from some direct sunlight; however, it will grow in the full range of sun conditions. This plant will also tolerate most soil types as long as there is no extended sogginess. Growing to 3-4′ tall and wide, Kodiak Jet Black diervilla is perfect for mass plantings of all types.
This shrub is currently available online. It will be in garden centers in 2026.
