Tiny Habit; BIG DISPLAY!
Not everyone has space for a big plant, even if they love the statement it makes in the garden. That’s why Legend of the Small® bottlebrush (Fothergilla x intermedia) is so great; it still has all the impact of a large fothergilla, but in a little habit that’s perfectly suited for modern landscapes.
Legend of the Small bottlebrush grows between 2-2.5 feet tall and 2-4 feet wide, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in show! Starting strong in spring, it puts on an eye-catching display of milky-white flowers that pollinators love. Summer brings a calm blue-green hue to the foliage, which explodes in fall with vibrant tones of orange, yellow, and red for a fiery finale.
This North American native thrives in USDA zones 5–9. Its manageable habit makes it a wonderful choice for the middle of a border or a low hedge with multi-season appeal. It is an adaptable shrub that can grow in a range of sun exposures and any well-drained soil. Like other fothergilla, Legend of the Small bottlebrush may produce suckers, but you can easily control them by pulling or cutting them as needed.
Small Spring Shrubs
Legend of the Small bottlebrush is a winner for its fall foliage, but its spring flowers are just as charming. For more tiny bloomers that show up in spring, check out this fantastic list by Kristina on our Proven Winners® ColorChoice® website: Small Shrubs for Spring.
