All the Beauty, None of the Worry
Butterfly bush is a popular summer plant for many reasons: it’s showy, long-lasting, low-maintenance, and a magnet for pollinators! What people don’t like, however, is its aggressive spreading. So, for the gardeners who want to enjoy the benefits without the worry, the non-invasive Lo & Behold® ‘Purple Haze’ butterfly bush (Buddleia x) might be the perfect choice. It offers the beauty and reliable performance you love, but this time, with peace of mind.
Lo & Behold ‘Purple Haze’ butterfly bush grows in a low-spreading, horizontal habit that reaches a mature size of 2–3 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Its dark purple flowers are a midsummer dream, delighting gardeners and pollinators until frost with their rich color and charming fragrance.
Lo & Behold ‘Purple Haze’ butterfly bush is suited to USDA zones 5–9. It performs best in full sun and well-draining soil, as it dislikes being overly wet or soggy. Once established, it is very drought tolerant. We recommend pruning in early spring. Buddleia tends to emerge later than other garden plants, so be patient with it. As the temperature rises, watch for pale green leaf buds to emerge at the base of the plant.
Note: Lo & Behold ‘Purple Haze’ is sold as “summer lilac” instead of “butterfly bush” in Oregon to differentiate this non-invasive variety from the invasive types
