Plant of the Week: NewGen INDEPENDENCE®  Boxwood

NewGen Independence boxwood in the landscape

Blight? Leafminer? No problem!

Boxwood has long been a staple in American landscapes, enjoyed for its lush foliage and adaptability. With NewGen® boxwood, we are redefining how this classic shrub performs in the garden by focusing on improved disease and pest resistance.

Extensively tested by Saunders Brothers—North America’s leading experts in the genus—NewGen varieties display strong resistance to boxwood blight and boxwood leafminer, without sacrificing the look gardeners love. Developed and bred in America to meet the challenges of our landscapes, the NewGen series is a fitting feature for this Fourth of July weekend. So, without further ado, let’s discuss NewGen® Independence boxwood (Buxus x).

NewGen Independence boxwood foliage.

NewGen Independence boxwood grows in a handsome, globe-like shape. Its deep green leaves are slightly elongated, adding a unique bit of texture to the rounded mound. Beneath the foliage, a strong branching structure helps it withstand heavy snow loads for a stable winter appearance. With a medium growth rate, it reaches about 3′ tall and wide, making it a great choice for a border or hedge.

NewGen Independence boxwood is suited to USDA zones 5b-8, where it grows happily in any sun exposure (full sun to shade). While it will perform nicely in most well-drained soils, it does prefer neutral or alkaline pH levels. Minimal pruning is needed, but you can give it a light trim to shape in late spring or early summer. Make sure to only cut into the new growth; cutting into thick stems can leave holes in the plant that take a long time to fill back in.
