Spice Baby™ Koreanspice viburnum in the landscape

Spice, Spice, Baby!

With its enchanting fragrance, effortless care, and multi-season interest, the garden appeal of Koreanspice viburnum is truly endless!

Today, I am highlighting the smallest offering in our Spice™ series, the lovely Spice Baby™ Koreanspice viburnum (Viburnum carlesii), which stands at just 3.5-5′ tall and wide. This compact variety has all the same exceptional qualities of its larger counterparts, but in a more versatile form that fits nicely into a broader range of landscapes, especially those working with limited space.

For many, Spice Baby viburnum is at its peak in spring, when adorned with large, snowball-shaped blooms. These flowers are not only visually captivating, but they have a spicy, earthy fragrance that pollinators and gardeners find hard to resist. In fall, this plant provides dazzling color as the foliage takes on rich red and burgundy tones.

Spice Baby viburnum is suited to USDA zones 4-8. Outside of its visual qualities, it is a shrub that is very much enjoyed for its durability, displaying excellent deer resistance and adaptability to the landscape. It enjoys full to part sun and will grow in any well-draining soil. It does prefer a slightly acidic pH and will not tolerate sogginess.

Get Long-Lasting Fall Color

As we move through November here in West Michigan, most plants have dulled from the vibrant burst of color they held early in the season. And, looking back, perhaps your garden wasn’t quite as colorful as you hoped. If that is the case, consider adding some of the shrubs featured in the video below, and don’t miss the mention of the Spice™ series we talked about today!
