Plant of the Week: STING®  Arborvitae

An Exclamation Point for Your Garden!

While it may not be a giant beanstalk or a soaring skyscraper, Sting® arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis) certainly aims for the clouds! This native evergreen has a tall, slender shape that adds structure and vertical interest to the landscape. With its 20-foot-tall frame, it naturally draws the eye upward but takes up less than 2 square feet of ground space. It’s the perfect choice for making a year-round statement without sacrificing too much of your precious real estate.

Sting arborvitae has lush evergreen foliage.

Sting arborvitae is a very attractive evergreen. Its lush green foliage is a welcome sight throughout the year, serving as a beautiful backdrop and reliable source of color. Thanks to its narrow width, it is a fantastic space-saving option. Its skinny silhouette brings a unique structure to garden designs, working well as a hedge, privacy screen, or specimen plant.

Sting arborvitae is suited to USDA zones 3-8. It enjoys full sun to part sun and will grow in any well-draining soil. Pruning is not needed, as it naturally grows in a narrow column. If you would like to give it a light trim or a bit of shaping, it is best to do so in late spring.

‘Tis the Season!

The holiday season is here, and my house is all decked out! The highlight, of course, is the Christmas tree, beautifully decorated with twinkling lights and a collection of sentimental ornaments. Shiny silver tinsel tops the whole thing off, and while the tiny strings may be a pain to pick up in January, for now, they look just great!

Speaking of festive designs, Sting arborvitae provides lovely winter interest, especially when adorned with ribbons and bows. In the picture below, the arborvitaes liven up the front entrance with their handsome green foliage, making for a delightful holiday porch.
