An Autumn Beauty
The first day of autumn is Sunday, and your garden may soon start to look like it. Fall-colored shrubs aren’t the only way you can enjoy your garden in autumn; fall berries really make your garden pop while other plants are winding down. Pearl Glam® beautyberry’s (Callicarpa x) vibrant purple berries are sure to make a statement in your fall garden.

Clusters of round purple berries adorn the arching branches on this elegant shrub in late summer/early fall. But even before it fruits, Pearl Glam® sports deep purple foliage all season long, giving a bit of drama to the garden. Unlike conventional varieties that tend to sprawl, Pearl Glam® has a tidy, upright habit that takes up far less space. At 4-5’ tall and 2-3’ wide, this shrub is great for foundation plantings, borders, or even cutting gardens, as the berries look fabulous in cut flower arrangements.
Pearl Glam® is suited for USDA zones 5-8 and is best planted in full sun as foliage color, flowering, and fruiting will be negatively impacted by too much shade. It is also incredibly deer-resistant (so deer-resistant, in fact, it’s in our Deer Proof™ program).
As it blooms on new wood, Pearl Glam® can be pruned in spring if desired. At the cooler end of its hardiness range, it may die back to the ground in winter. If that happens, don’t prune; wait for the new growth to begin to emerge (keep in mind Pearl Glam® is pretty late to emerge, so be patient), and then remove any wood that isn’t showing signs of life.
The No-Lawn Life
Would you remove your entire lawn? Stacey did! Check out the video below, where Stacey shares how she removed her lawn, why she did it, and what her plans are to replace it. And be sure to stick around and follow Stacey on her no-lawn journey.
