Energize Your Garden
Although we’ve only just reached the end of January, it’s never too early to start thinking about how to revitalize a landscape that might be looking a bit dull. To bring fresh excitement and energy to your garden, try adding Double Play® Gold Spirea (Spiraea japonica). As part of the Double Play® series, this spirea offers a striking color combination that will excite any gardener looking to add a pop of color to their garden. Plus, it’s sure to create a buzz due to its ability to attract pollinators!

Double Play® Gold spirea bursts onto the scene in spring with bright golden-yellow foliage. By early summer, it is covered in hot pink flowers that contribute beautifully to the plant’s season-long color. With its compact, low-mounded habit, this plant reaches about 1.5 to 2 feet tall and wide, making it a great choice for borders, foundation plantings, low hedges, and mass plantings.
Cold-hardy to USDA Zone 3 and heat-tolerant to USDA Zone 8, Double Play® Gold spirea grows best in full sun to part sun. This low-maintenance shrub adapts to various soil types; however, it does need to be free draining. It is considered deer- and disease-resistant, and once established, it is quite drought-tolerant. While pruning isn’t required, you can shape it in early spring for a neat appearance, and deadheading can be done after flowering to encourage reblooming throughout the season.
Shrubs for Small Spaces
Every inch of garden space counts, no matter how small. Double Play® Gold spirea is a great compact choice, both in width and height.
