Plant of the Week: PERFECTO MUNDO® Orange Azalea

There’s a lot of orange in the landscape at this time of the year, but orange from an azalea isn’t something we expect to see. But we’ve got one to show you: Perfecto Mundo® Orange azalea. These crazy things, along with the other Perfecto Mundo varieties, are blooming like it’s spring.

Perfecto Mundo® Orange isn’t Jack-o’-lantern orange; it’s more of a blood orange color. As much as I love Halloween, I think I like this shade better than pumpkin orange.

Like the other Perfecto Mundo® azalea varieties, Perfecto Mundo® Orange grows about 2.5′ tall and 3-4′ wide. They will grow in full sun or part shade (filtered shade is ideal) and are hardy in USDA 6b-9.

These plants were developed by Dr. Tom Ranney and his team at the NCSU Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center in Asheville, NC. They were selected for their outstanding flowering – both for the showy doubled blooms and the very long bloom time. Oh yes – they’re heat tolerant and have been known to show good resistance to lace bugs, too!

Orange not your thing?

That’s OK. There are six colors of Perfecto Mundo® azalea available. If you’re going for a Halloween theme, you could plant Perfecto Mundo® Purple with Perfecto Mundo® Orange. Or grow Perfecto Mundo® Double Dark Pink for Valentine’s Day. Whatever the occasion, I think Perfecto Mundo® Double White is a good addition. I think that may be my favorite. It’s poll season, so let’s take a survey: what’s your favorite color azalea? (Poll is closed, but see next week’s SONIC BLOOM Weigela post for results!)
