Plant of the Week: LEGEND OF THE FALL® Bottlebrush

The fall equinox is still a few weeks away, but when the calendar turns over to September, it sure feels like autumn is here. Maybe we’re still wearing shorts and drinking iced tea instead of cider, but we know summer is coming to an end.

That’s okay because fall means foliage, and there’s no better fall color than on Fothergilla – also known as bottlebrush for its distinctively-shaped spring flowers. Legend of the Fall® is a new selection with outstanding autumn foliage. Yellow, orange, red – it’s all happening here!

But, Legend of the Fall is more than just pretty fall foliage or nice spring flowers. It was also selected for superior performance. It has excellent branching and a nice full habit that looks really good in garden beds or landscapes.

The plant grows 4-5′ tall and wide, but if you don’t have that kind of room, Legend of the Small™ is a small-leaf, small-stature Fothergilla x intermedia that grows to just 2-2.5′ tall and 2-3′ wide. Both are hardy in USDA zones 5-9 and can be grown in either full sun or part shade.

Everything’s Coming Up Roses!

Next week I pack my rose-printed masks and head off to Milwaukee, WI, for the American Rose Society National Convention and Rose Show. I’m very excited to meet some of the many rosarians I’ve been corresponding with over the years – in person!

If you’re there, I’ll have a table set up in the vendor area…please stop by and see me! I’ll be bringing lots of rose-related goodies to pass out, and I can give you a sneak peek at our new GORGEOUS rose line…coming to garden centers in 2023! – Natalie
