This Weigela Has It All!

If you love the dark foliage of Wine & Roses® Weigela but want the rebloom of the Sonic Bloom® Weigela series, you are going to love today’s Plant of the Week: Sonic Bloom Wine™ Weigela, which combines beautiful dark foliage and extremely long bloom time to give you a truly exceptional display.

While the foliage of Sonic Bloom Wine™ is not quite as dark as Spilled Wine® weigela, its deep purple coloring contrasts beautifully with the bubble-gum pink flowers. Its blooms emerge in late spring and repeatedly through the summer, creating a stunning show that you and the hummingbirds will enjoy all summer long.

This weigela has a slightly more narrow-than-tall habit, growing to 4-5’ tall and 3-4’ wide, making it a great choice for the middle of a border or even as a hedge. It is hardy in USDA Zones 4-8 (The USDA updated plant hardiness zone map; check out this updated map to see if your zone changed), and for the best color and bloom, we recommend planting in full sun.

Like the other shrubs in the Sonic Bloom® weigela series, Sonic Bloom Wine™ doesn’t require pruning in order for it to rebloom, and it maintains its habit naturally, so there is no need to prune it to shape. It does benefit from a rejuvenation prune every 3 to 5 years; just remove ⅓ of the thickest branches all the way to the ground.

Thanksgiving

For those in America, next Thursday is Thanksgiving, so if you’re celebrating, enjoy lots of good food and the company of family and friends. And while Sonic Bloom Wine™ weigela might not be the wine on your Thanksgiving prep grocery list for this weekend, you can always add it to your 2024 garden list!

Have a fabulous weekend!
